Is your secret dream to start a YouTube channel of your own but you don’t think your English is good enough? Take some creative inspiration and courage to get started from my top-five YouTube channels by non-native speakers of English…

(1) Venus Angelic – Venus makes videos about Japanese culture as well as her life as a ‘living doll’ (a person with a dolly persona). Venus is a polyglot who is able to speak 7 languages!

(2) CutiePieMarzia – Mariza makes imaginative beauty, fashion and lifestyle vlogs. Originally from Italy, when Marzia began her channel she had strong Italian pronunciation and a flat voice. Within the space of three years her speech has transformed to become effervescent and charming.

(3) The Vegan Corner – This channel makes videos about vegan cooking which are presented by an Italian chef. It’s a bit different from the other channels mentioned in this post, as the videos are scripted. If you’re worried about being able to speak spontaneously in English, then scripting your videos may be a solution for you.

(5) PewDiePie – Did you know that the YouTube channel with the most fans (more than 40 million subscribers at the time of writing) is created by PewDiePie (Pewds) who is originally from Sweden? Pewds makes gaming and comedy videos and is also the boyfriend of CutiePieMarzia, mentioned above.

I wanted to include one last example which is YouTube channel DC Toys Collector. It’s not in my top picks as it is a channel about kids toys – which isn’t really something I’m interested in. 😉 However, it’s worth a mention because at the time of writing, it is the third most successful channel for total views on YouTube. It’s presented by an anonymous Brazilian woman…

If you have ever wanted to start a YouTube channel but held yourself back out of the concern that your English isn’t good enough, be inspired by these channels. YouTube is one of those things that you get better at by doing – and this applies to ALL PEOPLE, not just people whose first language isn’t English. If you have been thinking about it for a while, there is no better time to start than now. Smash your perfectionism and fears about not being good enough and just do it!

  1. forget starting YouTube channel , One does not need any inspiration more than being able to speak like you jade ,i think you represent the perfection in speaking English, you are too good to be real…..are you real?

    • That’s very kind to say Jaafar but to be honest it surprises me to hear that. I don’t always find it easy to speak, even today after years of practice making videos. But what I do know is that it gets A LOT easier with practice.

    Hi Jade,
This is really inspiring, I am so self-conscious about my Spanish accent.
I have a few videos but I never made them public, I think I got some courage from this post.
    Many thanks.

Hi Jade! First of all I’d like to tell you that I always watch your videos and I find them very inspiring! I’m from Italy and I often thought of creating a website with Italian lessons but every time I start doing it I think “what will the others think of me? And if I also upload some videos, “will they think I’ve got a bad accent?”. Thanks for the encouragement, you’re the best!
