‘Greensleeves’ was a popular song in Tudor England. I have known this song since I was a child and I often find myself humming along to its tune. If you have lived in England, you may also recognise this tune from the music that is played by some ice cream vans as they drive around trying to catch the attention of children!

‘Greensleeves’ is sometimes said to have been written by King Henry VIII of England about his wife Ann Boleyn (before he beheaded her, of course!).

The song is about unrequited love. The Lady Greensleeves has rejected the narrator of the song by ‘casting him off discourteously.’ Despite his rejection, he still loves and longs for his Lady Greensleeves.
